For years I have been lucky to have seen one garter snake each summer in my garden. This year I found a shed skin and several weeks later a baby garter snake. What might they be eating.
I'd post this somewhere else if I knew where!
Garter snakes
A lot of snakes are called garter snakes, but most of them eat earthworms, slugs and small toads & frogs. Bigger adults can eat mice and other small rodents.
Around here, Snails and slugs. Smaller snakes on the ground eat smaller insects on or near ground, like the stuff you find hanging out under a board or log. And 1 baby snake is unusual, they are seldom an only child - there are more around somewhere.
Be happy it's just a garter snake, one day last year I found an adult Copperhead next to my 3 x 8' raised bed. Grabbed a shovel and killed him quick. Got one the year before that too.
