Summer/Fall Gardens 2015 Pt 5

Fort Worth, TX(Zone 8a)

We came from here: http://davesgarden.com/community/forums/t/1399194/

It's the dog days of summer here in my part of the world. The garden's not producing much, but I'm thinking about fall and dreaming of cooler nights and days. A little rain would be nice as well.

yep all of my tomatoes and peppers have all but worn out, and i definitely have fall crops on my mind, lol.

Everson, WA(Zone 8a)

The drought has all but decimated my stuff. The tomatoes which usually last into Oct have about had it. I am glad I got a good cole crop the early part of summer. I only have onions and green beans left with the exception of two monster heads of savoy cabbage. I am so discouraged no fall crops fo me this year.

Anderson, IN(Zone 6a)

I have done worse when I did not grow a garden , This season , is and has been , Odd ..
My tomatoes zero so far , Big ones really slow ,, little yellow ones are growing but are way behind and slow ,Greens I got though ,, no sun and rain for the first part of the growing season , all sun the past two weeks almost ,

Green , White , and Blonde Cucumbers , they are still harvesting ,

Still lots of tomatoes in my garden.
A few peppers and the long beans are starting to produce now.
Happy gardening !

I think my pollinator sections in my veggie garden have almost done better than the veggies themselves this year, lol. I had dahlia "thomas edison" planted behind the coneflower, but it decided that it wanted to fall over and lay against my zucchini plants that are on the row across from it. Im thinking it will be dug up this fall and planted elsewhere next year, and in its place ill plant some White Blazing star / Gayfeather.

And now the melon count on my cantaloupe vines is up to 3

the summer crop harvests are beginning to slow down by a lot. One of my metal wash tub planters is vacant again so i will try to squeeze in a quick small bush bean planting to see if i get any luck.

Ive also found a new way to store seeds that i am finding that i like much more than just stuffing them in a sandwich bag in my chester drawer, lol

I love using medicine bottles for seed storage! I also use small baby food jars. In a bind, a paper envelope works well, too.

SE Houston (Hobby), TX(Zone 9a)

I spent the entire day, yesterday, sorting seeds for an upcoming seed swap....only keeping what I can comfortably manage in my garden.

Let's play, "You name it, I've got it!"

Poughkeepsie, NY(Zone 6a)

Harvested my carrots and blanched/froze them yesterday.
Sweet and red onions are harvested.
Been eating some Dino kale and planting more tomorrow.
Brandywine Toms are taking forever to ripen.
Washington Cherry Toms slowly ripening.
As far as peppers go Cheyennes starting to ripen so are 'Lipstick' and 'Lunchbox'.
Anaheim slow to ripen. 'Paprika' slow as well.
Sweet Banana peppers slow to ripen but I've been eating some light green and yellow anyways.

All either in my 3x8' raised bed or 5 gallon buckets and pots.

One of my carrots (Johnny's "Hybrid main crop")

Linda dinars money bouillon dollars bucks $

I shrink package my seeds in pouches with my vacuum packer. Nice and flat and easy to thumb through. then I freeze them until planting time.

SE Houston (Hobby), TX(Zone 9a)

Ok, Eweed,
I JUST got a vacuum sealer last week, and it's still in the box! Teach me...I also have 1,000 (yes, ONE THOUSAND) 8"x12" pouches, LOL!

Tommy,
TEACH ME to grow carrots like that, PLEASE!!!! What kinda soil did you use? I think I have that variety of carrots in my "giveaway" pile. I may need to retrieve them, LOLOLOL!!!

Everson, WA(Zone 8a)

Linda an 8x12 pouch is pretty big I put all my small seeds in one pouch that big then put the big seed corn ,peas, beans in individual pouches.. I am planting 10 year old tomato seeds and they germ as good as fresh seed. Another benefit is the mice if you have any around do not chew through the plastic. They got in my gh and dug the squash seed out of my starter trays. the crafty little devils.

You will be glad you got 1,00 bags they will come in mighty handy. I sealed all the onions for Linda . She peeled them and chopped them then we stuffed them into pouches and walla ready to cook with. Another thing they are good for is corn both on the cob and removed from the cob. Good for lots of things. Like the tv ad shows buying in bulk and sealing it in use sizes really works. Enjoy

SE Houston (Hobby), TX(Zone 9a)

So, Eweed,
I should put the seeds in the little ziplok jewelry pouches first, then, seal them into the larger pouch?

Once the new seeds I just ordered are sealed, I'm going to start storing future seeds in the freezer, or the veggie crisper in the fridge.

Thanks!

Everson, WA(Zone 8a)

No need to Ziploc plain paper will do

SE Houston (Hobby), TX(Zone 9a)

Oh, I see! Cause the vacuum seal will suck the air out of paper packets, probably even better.

Thanks, Eweed!

Everson, WA(Zone 8a)

Your right

Cascade, VA(Zone 7a)

call me crazy but i went ahead with starting some of my cole crop seed to be planted in my second garden bed that sits under dappled shade / sun. Figured they could get an earlier start than the ones that would be sitting in full sun. Seeing some beets popping up, planning on growing them for the greens

Thumbnail by jmc1987
SE Houston (Hobby), TX(Zone 9a)

And what will you do with the beetroots?

P.S. You're not crazy...

i was not really so much expecting beet roots in a shaded garden area, i had planned on sowing some more beet seed later on this month down in my main full sun veggie bed though.

Either way, any and all beet roots will either be canned, or roasted

SE Houston (Hobby), TX(Zone 9a)

Good answer!

Fort Worth, TX(Zone 8a)

Linda, make sure you are growing the shorter (in length) carrots. Keep the seeds moist. It can take up to THREE WEEKS for carrot seeds to germinate.

SE Houston (Hobby), TX(Zone 9a)

Steph,
My last carrots germinated in 5 days. That's not the problem. I want to grow a sweet carrot, about 6"-8" long.

I threw out some seeds last session and picked only ONE like I described above. It had a blunt tip like a cigar, and was the sweetest carrot I've ever eaten.

The rest were very short, a little sweet, and fairly unremarkable...

I have NO clue what variety the sweet one was...

Madison, AL(Zone 7b)

The super-sweet carrots of the supermarkets are all hybrids. Something like Yaya might be what you are looking for.

On the heirloom side, Danvers doesn't have a blunt tip, but it has a nice sweet carrot taste, tolerates harder soils and is about 6-7" long.

SE Houston (Hobby), TX(Zone 9a)

Thanks, NicoleC!

I'm OK with hybrids, too! I think I ordered some Danvers. I looked at some pictures until I found something that looked like the carrot I'm looking for. I think Danvers might be it!

Hugs!

Ha!

Everson, WA(Zone 8a)

But I yam a 72 yo boy sew eyes more specilike lol

Now that we have agreement on that subject back to the topic. I just harvested another gob of beautiful yellow zuks they are trying to over run me. So glad I have friends that don't have gardens. While picking them I considered ripping them out and filling the box its 4'x12'x 24 inches with some fall cole crops. I can grow quite a few Broccoli and cauliflower in there and if I want more I can use 2 more boxes. Less weeding and better watering than in the ground. So nice to not have to bend over so far.

Greenville, SC(Zone 7a)

Here is my harvest from this morning, Tromboncino had pickle worms and already processed and in the freezer. Bulb end made a casserole and the neck made fried squash (actually roasted in the oven). Notice the pickle worms in the neck.

just received my order of perpetual spinach today, and in the ground the seeds went, eager to give those a try

The perpetual heat wave has made the stink bug population explode. Everyone's harvest looks fantastic.

SE Houston (Hobby), TX(Zone 9a)

I have these Thai peppers, and Chocolate Habaneros (450,000 Scovilles) growing.

And, the sweeties...

Every time I muster up some courage to go outside , somebody turns up the heat!!!

woah, just look at all those peppers!

Cascade, VA(Zone 7a)

well my lettuce and kale have popped up, that i will put in my part shade bed. I think i am losing some seed viability on the Siberian kale, but the dinosaur kale a friend shared with me all sprouted up perfectly.

also my cantaloupe is almost ready, the outside skin is turning a tan / beige color
