Albatross in Queens?!?

New York, United States

Hi all, I'm quite new to birding, so I may be throwing up an unwarranted alarm, but I just saw something really interesting from my back porch in the Sunnyside neighborhood of Queens in New York City (about 3 miles SW of LaGuardia Airport).

It was a very large white bird, flying high - shaped a bit like a gull, but much larger and more slender with more sharply pointed wings. It had a dark bill, longer than a gulls, and it seemed to have a black border all around its wings.
It flew directly overhead quickly, and as I said, rather high up, so I only saw it for a few seconds, but it made quite an impression. This was around 8PM on Saturday, July 18th.

Looking in my book (I'm using the Sibley, 2nd Edition) - the only two things that seem close to me are the juvenile Yellow-nosed and Black-browed Albatrosses - especially the Yellow-nosed. Is this possible? What else could it have been?

Northumberland, United Kingdom(Zone 9a)

Sounds more like a Gannet [Northern Gannet] to me - at a guess, taking a short cut from its fishing grounds in Long Island Sound back to the ocean.
