What to do about scale on Adeniums?

KINGSHILL, VI(Zone 14)

Hi, folks!

I grow Adeniums, way too many. I have a dreadful problem that has turned into an epidemic. What to do to control scale? They cause nasty swelling on leaves and new stem growth. Adeniums are fussy in that they dislike any kind of soap. Photos below--- Any suggestions appreciated. Hand picking isn't an option, as there are at least 40 plants affected. And no systemics, as I have honeybees.

(((( I left here to go to All Things Plants, but they recently got rid of me without any notification, pffft the communists! I truly don't know who I offended or how. So I'm back here, paid my years' subscription.))))

I only have one adenium and it is clean of any critters so I am far from credible on this but since scale is on the surface of the plant tissue I imagine you could smother it with a light oil like Neem recommended for summer use. These oils are not harmful if you spray in the evening when the bees and other beneficials are usually resting. It would take several applications to eliminate subsequent generations of the insects. First and foremost - verify that adeniums can handle oil applications.

You can always consult with your extension service, it is possible you have a unique strain of scale and they may have experience treating it. Tell them you are interested in the least harmful treatment.

Good luck.

For scale , I use bord oil and copper oil . mainly on citrus and alteriums [ spelling ]
I would pick a plant you don't mind losing to test on . I have bad outbreaks in about march and again in Aug . I think birds bring the scale in on their feet .
