I nearly stepped on this poor little guy in my side yard yesterday. He was too young to really fly... would flap his wings and get about a foot off the ground. Size: about 5-6" head to tail.
Photo 1: shows interesting face and orange/yellow tail marking
Photo 2: Out of focus, but the only "head-on" shot I got
Photo 3: another showing markings
Edit: a friend ID'd it as a Cedar Waxwing"... is that correct?

CLOSED: Need ID for baby bird
Yep, juvenile Cedar Waxwing
Oh, glad you didn't step on it. Your friend and OldNed are correct. That is a cool bird we rarely see in our yard. My husband doesn't claim to have a favorite bird, but he sure gets excited when he sees the Cedar Waxwings. :)

I love them too! We rarely see them... I'm sure the nest is in the huge tree that overhangs our driveway and makes a mess with all the fruit. I'm sure plenty of them visit that tree, but it's so tall and leafy that it's hard to see anything in it. The baby was on the ground near the tree. Thanks all for the ID!
