Seeds Sprouted

Gilmer, TX

Well, I guess I was just too anxious. Iwent ahead and started six seeds before I read that I shouldn't do this until spring. All six have sprouted, must have been good seeds. (Thank you Brugmansia) So my question, what do I do now. I started them in those little peat pellets and am moving them into a small pot today. It is still nice weather here. Should I put them outside or keep them inside so they won't have to adjust to outside just to have to come in again. Any help will be appreciated and I promise to wait to start any more. Well, I promise to try anyway. Pam

these must be great seeds Pam, I started some Thursday, yes, this past Thursday and I have about 6 sprouted already. I planted 3 trays, so I'm going to have to buy several more grow lights just for these:)

Why would you wait till spring to start the seeds???I thought that you start them the sooner the better-while they're fresh.Right or wrong???Don't confuse me!!!!

yes, it is better to start them as fresh as possible. Some people may not have the room to grow them, but I always try to get mine in as soon as possible. Still have a few to do tomorrow.

Well on some thread I read about not starting the seeds now. Does this mean I'm free to start to my heart's desire? YEAAAAAAAAAAA! Do I just keep moving them up in pot size as they grow? I went ahead and left them outside tonight with the rest. I bought a bunch of the little peat pellets when Rite-Aid went out of business, so I'm going to dig some more out and go crazy. Do we know what these seeds are, or are they a mix? I'm so excited, I just cant' hide it, I can lose control and it doesn't matter.

Pam, this is just MHO, but the bigger the pot they are in the faster they seem to grow, if you have the room, save yourself the trouble of moving them from 8 different pot sizes. otoh, if you don't have room they will be okay, mine just always grow faster in big pots. i rooted some brugs in 4" pots and larger pots, and the ones in bigger pots just grow faster...just a thought. if you don't have a greenhouse, think about some kind of cold frame.... i will have to take pics when we get frost, it will certainly look like fred fox's yard.

Thanks Arlene. I will let them settle in the pots they are in now and then move them right into the pots I want them to stay in next year. That's going to look funny, this little plant in a great big pot. Pam

I started mine in the green house before I read the thread about not starting till spring. I have 22 little seedlings up and just got more seeds from Karen and Valleygrow. Arlene is right, the bigger the pot, the faster they grow. I usually start them in little pots and as soon as I see the roots in the drain holes, I move them up. Flourescent lights 6-12" above the plants will work if you don't have enough windows.

I don't have a greenhouse, but luckily, we have three huge picture windows that face the west. That's where my plants spend the winter. Hopefully we will soon be moving to a house with a sunroom. Thanks to all for the tips. I sure don't want to mess these up. Started 12 more today. Pam

Yes, best to put in large pots as soon as they get root bound in their containers. I always let my brugmansia get rootbound before moving, but when they get rootbound I move them up to as large a pot as I have based on their importance to me for breeding or stick them directly in the ground come spring.

Hi,
Does anyone have any seeds they would share with a newbie for a sase. I keep reading the post about the brugmansia, and you all make it sound so intrigueing. I would love to try to start some seeds. I do have a generous trader sending me a baby yellow and a white. I really am looking forward to seeing this beautiful flower in person.

Thanks for the tip on when to move, Eric. If all these seeds you sent make it,I will be living in a forest come spring, but that's alright. I have some very special gardening friends in town I would love to share some with. Brugs are new to this area, so would be a special gift. Also hope to have cuttings to share with gardening friends here. Well, off to start more seeds. Pam
