CLOSED: Grosbeak?

Aurora, CO(Zone 4a)

I give up. Huge bill, but plumage has me confused. Cute little guy.

Looks like an Adult female Rise-breasted Grosbeak

Aurora, CO(Zone 4a)

The almost pink breast on this bird caught my eye at first. Could it be a juvie male with plumage not yet developed. Their song is sweet, causing me to think we had another happy robin nearby. Thanks for your help.

Nice Pictures! It's a female Black-headed Grosbeak.

The Female Rose-breasted is paler without the yellow coloring. Also the Rose-breasted has more streaking on the breast than the Black-headed.

You can actually compare pics of both species side-by-side by going to the pictures and enlarging them. Then pull up the other in "Similar Species".

You might actually get both species where you are. We only get the Rose-breasted.

You reckon this female has a nest someplace? I'm pretty sure I've glimpsed the male prior to this. This is getting to be quite fun. Perhaps I'll see fledglings soon! Thanks for the information.

Yep, I agree with nutsaboutnature. Female Black-headed Grosbeak is a much better fit.

I hope they do nest nearby!
By-the-way, my Grosbeaks love safflower seed. I remember you had mentioned you might buy some to discourage the grackles.

Not doing safflower seed this year after all. Am starting to enjoy the grackles more, and we have red-winged blackbirds nesting here now. They can nest anywhere they damn well please, as far as we're concerned. I can sit for hours just waiting for one to open his wings for a photo. Our local wetlands area has been disturbed by light-rail construction, which I suspect is the reason we're suddenly seeing new species. Thanks for your input.
