This is my first year growing potatoes. My neighbor ask me why would I grow potatoes. She says it's just easier to buy them at the store. I asked her when was the last time she bought potatoes. When you are living on a disability income $5.00 ($4,99) for a bag of potatoes is a lot, and I love taters. I'm growing them in grow bags that I made from landscaping fabric. I am able to unfold the bag as the taters grow and I add dirt. My potatoes are
Rose Finn
Yukon Gold
Red Potato (don't know the name)

i cant help but roll my eyes when people say such things, lol. I hate to sound like one of those gloom and doom type of people, but i truly believe that with the way food costs are going crazy, unless you are mega rich you will either have to grow it yourself or do without at some time in the future.

Besides homegrown tastes better, even with potatoes.

Food costs as a percentage of (average) income bottomed out near 9% and has been rising in recent years; it's now about 12%. Historically it's been in the 40-50% range. The cheap food of the past few decades is the anomaly, and that's been even with the rise of tropical exotics. This has permitted the skyrocketing prices in housing in the same time frame.
That said, I don't usually recommend Irish potatoes for southern gardeners. Sweet potatoes and winter squash both provide a better ROI in our climate. But... I admit I like Irish potatoes better. Unfortunately, so do my pests.
ah yeah i lost a big pot of purple potatoes a year or so ago to some kind of weird pests that resemble a piece of tree bark more than they do a bug, but when you touch them they jump away.
Pikes Nursery had the Rose Finn so I thought I would try them since fingerling type potatoes are so expensive in the store.
