Hi!!! I am new to this.....Have a shredded miami white with deformed leaves

Altamonte Springs, FL(Zone 9a)

Hi everybody!!!!
I am new to this site and have never done a chat board before. But I have become a brug nut...I have eight different plants at this time that were all little cuttings this summer from different sources.....now they are all in the 2 1/2 ft to 4 ft size......But I do have a problem, my Miami shredded has from infancy had deformed and weird leaves. Just recently it loss the growing tips on it's two main branches. It is sending up additional shoots from it's trunk, but they are deformed also.

Do I have a plant with a virus or something...I watch the kids like a hawk and use a hot pepper based spray for pests.
Please help!!!

Also, I would love additional cuttings. I understand that I can get those for postage? When my babies are big enough i will be happy to trade and share!!!!!!

Any info and help is greatly appreciated.

I have been reading the different threads and am enthralled by the information and camaraderie!!!!! Look forward to being part of all this great energy!!!!

I wish I could tell you about your plant, but I know someone else wiser will come along soon.
But I did want to welcome you to our group, we have such a fabulous group of brug lovers, and everyone is so generous and caring. And we are very lucky to have some great hybridizers too.
welcome to the gang:)

Sharbot, sounds like you have either spider mites or aphids. Aphids are the easiest to see and are on the very tips of the plant, usually green or gray and squish with your finger tips. Spider mites are harder to see, look on the underside of the leaves for webs. Also you can hold a sheet of white paper under a deformed leaf and flick the leaf with your finger tip. the mites should fall onto the paper where they can be seen crawling around. They are tiny. I would be careful with the hot-pepper wax, especially using it in the sun or heat of the day. Try a mixture of half and half alcohol and water with a squirt of dove or Ivory dishsoap, spray it on the leaves (be sure to get the undersides of the leaves). It will take a while to recover and grow new leaves.
Viruses usually cause spots on the leaves as the first symptom. There is no cure for a virus.

Hi Calalily and tiG!!!!!
I look forward to any and all help I can receive and all knowledge I can learn from all of you. Calalily, thank you for the info in the spray...I am going to try it tomorrow.

I do not see any eveidence of aphids, but that does not mean that they are not there. You mentioned spots on leaves. The older leaves get these round spots on them and eventually the leaf dies. Would that be a virus or just "old age".

I am happy to be one of the "gang". I look forward to learning so much more about these plants that I love...they are my babies!!!! So thanks to all for taking me under your "leaves".

Suzy

Suzy,
Old leaves turning yellow and falling off is just a normal thing for Brugs to do.

what does a miami shredded bloom look like?

North Vancouver, BC(Zone 8b)

Sharbot - welcome!
I too have to ask what a Miami Shredded White looks like?
Bug-wise - the best thing I keep in my greenhouse is a magnifying glass. Either I'm getting older or the bugs are getting smaller. Nobody say anything! Must be the bugs - global warming - I am NOT getting older!

sharbot....I personally like the idea of putting pictures in my journal, and then referencing them via a hyperlink so people can call them up either from hyperlink or directly from your journal.

Where are you located?

Spots on leaves sounds like a disease or virus to me....the brug leaves do turn yellow, but not sure they should be having spots on them also:)

Welcome to the brug addiction. Which varieties do you already have?

Suzy,
Here is one answer I received on your question:

Years ago, when I grew my first Brugs I used to store them for the winter in the window sill. These Brugs look a lot like the one in your photo. I think in my case it was a combination of light deficincy and lack of nutrition. The leaves on the Brugs were lighter and thinner than usual and the margins curled a bit inwards.

Another thing was leaf loss. Especially the lower leaves were lost, but sometimes the plants kept the lower ones and lost some in the middle of the stems.

I don`t know the circumstances, that the Brug on the picture is grown under, but it could be it just need more light and nutrition in a combination with lower temperature.

Hi Glory....you might have hit on something....this area in my backyard is receiving more shade now than in the summer and earlier fall.....I also probably need to feed it more...the others seemed to do better in this cooler weather 60 dgrees at night 80 to 85 daytime......but it must be a light thing and feeding. Well it is on the repotting list for tomorrow and it will get new osmicote and I will put it in a sunnier area. I'll keep you informed on how it does......Thank you so much for the information, I appreciate!!!!!
