This weather in Georgia is crazy. There have been so many temperature fluctuations tat the plants are responding. I was wondering why so many of my small plants were trying to bloom and a friend said that they may be responding to the temp fluctuations. I new that it could happen to onions but did not know that it could effect other veggies. I did go out and clip the onion tops by half to increase size. I hope this discourage bloom set.

I grew a lot of onions last year and the extreme temp variations did cause them to bloom, sending up flower stalks. That's exactly what you don't want. My blooming didn't occur until the onions were almost ready to harvest.

Your onions look great for this time of year. At this young age, they won't bloom, but could as they get larger. I have no idea if clipping will delay or prevent blooming.

Jo-Ann,
I never transplanted my onion transplants from the seedling trays, and was about to start throwing them out. They are the same size as Weedings, and don't show any signs of being in distress. I guess they wish they were planted out in the garden....

You think I could go ahead and transplant them now and have any hope of getting some full-size onions?

Ok. I just heard my own answer: "Nothing beats a wish, but a try..."

Duh...

I cut the stalks in half to get them to grow larger. From what I have read if you cut the stalks in half a couple times during their growth they will grow larger.
