Texas Mountain Laurel

Alvin, TX

I just bought a Texas Mountain Laurel, about 4 ft. tall. I'm afraid if I plant it in the ground, it won't like our very clay soil. I was wondering if it will grow well in a container and if so, what type of potting mix should I use?

You can most def. grow inground in Alvin. Just dig a hole, and mix the soil you got out of hole with an equal amount of compost or humus or one of those Miracle Grow fancy mixes. Plant tree and backfill with the soil/compost mix. With the rains we are having, the initial watering will be done for you. lucky. This is an easy plant, don't worry. It can get large, so plan location carefully. full sun is best.

Great to know. I had read that they must have rocky, limestone soil and are hard to grow. Still have not completely ruled out growing in a container though. I'll put it in the ground if I can find a good spot for it. Unfortunately, we have a lot of low spots on our property and I know it won't do well in those areas. Thanks for your help!

As long as water drains within 24 hrs, low spot OK but yes, does not like wet feet. Never heard about rocky soul. They are all over Houston and this area not particularly rocky

Great, thanks!!

I would use some organic potting soil and lots of compost. They do well in drought conditions and grow freely in the rocky Hill Country where the soil is caliche so they'll do well in your conditions. They are a slower growing "tree" and can sometimes be more like a large shrub.
