Hello Texans,
We are going on our annual Texas plant run. We are traveling from Oklahoma City to Nacogdoches, TX; to attend the Stephen F Austin Mast Arboretum Spring Sale. We'll pick up some roses, too. Either at the Antique Rose Emporium, Chamblee's or Chamberville Tree Farm. We leave this Thursday evening and return to OK this Sunday.
Could you recommend some nurseries with unusual plants? We don't mind driving a little out of the way. We are looking for annuals, perennials, shrubs and small trees but can get tropicals, also. I am buying for my garden and the university gardens of OSU at OKC. We love Aggie horticulture, and would appreciate any tips.
Thanks in advance, --- James
Road Trip: Texas Nursery with unusual plants
Hi James,
How far out of the way? Houston, in the Heights where I live can put you close to several cool nurseries that are very close together. Buchanans. Down the street Another Place in time, Joshua's and in walking distance from Buchanans, zone9tropicals. Zone9 is mainly online sales, but opens 1st and 3rd weekends. Let me know if you come this way. I have the keys to zone9 and can open it whatever day. Joshua's is one of my favorites, and they are all within 2 miles of each other.

James, how about the Carpenter daylily farm in center TX. How fun to do a multi city plant shopping tour. Maybe YOU can tell us which TX city has the best nurseries, lol
Hi James,
I'm one of the horticulture students who will be assisting you at the SFA Gardens Plant Sale.
Here are the good ones I know of so far.
HOUSTON AREA
Buchanan's Native Plants - I haven't been here yet, but it is on my own list.
Caldwell Nursery & Botanic Gardens (3 hrs away from SFASU) in Rosenburg, TX specializes in rare and unusual plants. In fact, a friend of mine is keeping me updated on her Variegated Meyer Lemon Tree which produces lemons with pink flesh. But they are closed on Sunday & Monday.
Joseph's Nursery in Manvel, TX is another good place if you want a unique variety at wholesale price. The majority of the fruit trees and exotic plants in my backyard are from here. They are an hour away from Caldwell Nursery.
DALLAS AREA - recommended by local friends there.
Calloway's Nursery
Covington's Nursery & Landscape Co.
I hope you get everything you need and want this weekend!
P.S. - Here is a link for the plant sale list, incase you didn't get the chance to see it.

Yes! Caldwells is an experience, winding garden trails, Tiki bar- it's amazing.
We are in Dallas, now. Drove in last night. Going early to Northaven Gardens. Then probably Redenta's and Rohde's. Plan on dropping by House nursery in Kaufman.
We need to check into a hotel in Nacadouches tonight; and get up bright and early for the Arboretum Sale.
Don't think we will be able to get as far as Houston. I need to get back to work by Monday for our own plant sale at Oklahoma State University - Oklahoma City! Thanks for the supportive responses. -still looking for nurseries along the Dallas-Kaufman-Tyler-Nacadouches route.
Why are all the nurseries in Texas. Closed on Sunday?!
Not in houston
Because rural country towns in Texas, like those in Oklahoma, roll up the sidewalks at suppertime. They might open after church and lunch, but usually have to take one day out of 7 off for a business that is too small to have shift type work and extra hands to help. Has something to do with the laws.
