Which TX city has the best nurseries?

East Texas, United States(Zone 8a)

I see many enthusiastic reports on nurseries around the state but wonder if it is biased because that is all one knows, or if there is a standard of excellence that applies, irrespective of location.

I haven't yet been to Austin or San Antonio nurseries so cant speak about it but I think Houston is the best b/c the weather permits growing almost year round so plant quality, availability, diversity and pricing is great, generally speaking.

Dallas, has great plants, but I've noticed a lot come from Houston area growers and are about 20% more expensive overall. Still, when in Dallas, I make a bee line to NHG.

I'm excluding places in unique locations and focusing on major metro area. So...what say ye? Which city has the best nurseries overall?

Fort Worth, TX(Zone 8a)

In San Antonio, Shades of Green is my favorite nursery.

Irving, TX(Zone 8a)

I love www.nhg.com in Dallas
Great plants and education programs

I think my topic title is misleading. What I was hoping is to start a discussion with those who travel among cities, Houston, Dallas, austin, etc about which city, as a unit, caters to gardeners best. Your faves and why they stand out, pref. throughout the state.

I never read anything in these forums from west TX folks. Surely, there are plant lovers there but few if any postings.

Just trying to bring some cohesiveness in an otherwise giant area.

Houston, TX(Zone 9a)

You know this, but I'll say anyway.
Houston Heights has a few nurseries close together making a nursery trip worth while. The famous Buchanans, great service and wide selection, Down the street Another Place in time, fun tropical selection in their hot house. For great tropical, Joshua's, great prices and the large warehouse of garden decor is a bonus. For the unusual, a back yard green house operation that is mainly an online order, does open 1st and 3rd weekends is zone9tropicals.com. Prices are cheaper of course than what is seen on the website. All of these nurseries are within 2 miles of one another, in fact one could walk to zone9 from Buchanans.

I truly think Houston is best but would love to hear from passionate Dallasites, SAtoners, and others about WHY their city is best nursery-wise. A friendly competition of sorts. Just trying to revive a very subdued (to state it kindly) forum.

Randy, I've never been but I thought Austin had a nursery cluster.

Houston, TX(Zone 9a)

I would too! I think Austin does have a nice cluster. And go Austinites!
