compost

It seems I've asked this before, but I just can't pull up the answer in my memory, so please be patient with me. lol

So.....do you guys till your compost into your garden spot, or do you just layer a couple of inches on top? I've read both, but just wanted to hear your take on it. Last year I tilled it in, and everything seemed to do great, but just wondering.

This is an ongoing debate : till vs no till. I have too many chores already so top dressing is all I do . I am pleased with results though I'm not a large scale veg gardener . If you have time energy and tiller, go for it. As for trees. Shrubs etc , I top dress with compost every few years and top dress with mulch yearly . I am happy with results so don't plan to change program

Thanks Vossner. Sounds like your plants are happy with your routine.

I just layer mine on top and let it work its way down naturally. When we first built our garden beds, we turned in lots of compost and amendments. Now I just sprinkle it on top.

We turn ours into the soil on the veggie planters when we plant in spring. Since we turn them anyway.
But for the rest of the yard, I just put on top and water it in. Or the best way....throw it all on right before a rain and let the Universe water it in for you....LOL. I must admit, that is my preferred way.
