The various seed companies say you can use several varieties of winter squash as summer squash by picking young fruits, Zucchino Rampicante or Tromboncino is probably the most well known. Do any you guys have any experience with this? I am trying several this year, tromboncino, cream of the crop, kamo, and even butternut and some patty pans are supposed to be good as a young fruit or winter squash. But mostly my info came from seed companies so I want to know if any of you had tried some both ways and if any stood out? Down south we traditionally fry summer squash or make a casserole and bake/roast winter squash, but I have grilled zucchini and patty pan, and both were very good. I wanted your thoughts in case there is a variety out there I don't have. Thanks in advance
I posted this in the beginner but thought you guys might have more insight.
Using Winter squash as summer squash?
Butternuts make good summer squash when picked immature. Acorns are ok, but leave a little to be desired flavorwise. Larger winter squash are edible, but pretty wasteful to use as summer squash. Never tried Delicata but they may also be passable as summer squash. Most summer squash do not form flesh, altho a few do.
Thanks Farmerdill, exactly what I was looking for.
I have used Delicata as summer squash. IMO they are pretty useless as winter squash since they have a notoriously short shelf life of a few months. I've had overgrown zucchini and yellow squash outlast mature Delicata. I quit growing them for that reason. I've stored pattypans with fair success.
