I think I may have convinced Santa. Can someone direct me to websites that have decent priced kits far small greenhouses. I want a complete kit with vents that open and the plexi-glass type of covering. It would take years of nagging at DH to get one built.
All I want for Christmas is a greenhouse
I want one for Christmas too. Only problem is no money...lol. I have a Lowes, and Home Depot card though. I could charge to major card from a greenhouse supply company for the supplies. BUT, I really cant yet. I am thinking of trying to build one myself...without heat, then later adding heat. Who would you get to build one anyway, a carpenter? I have seen different styles. If Im going to get one, it must be big enough to allow me to get my money's worth out of it. (like veggies etc....)
Oh.. I want one for Christmas, too. I mean I really need it so badly.. :o(
Kelly, I'm building one from 1" PVC. It is 10x12, and about the same dimensions as the free plans on the Sundance site. So far, we've put about $300 in it, which includes all the materials. Benches will probably cost me another $50-$100 depending on how we construct them. I'm using a combination of passive heat (a 3x5 black plastic horse trough from my local Tractor Supply filled with water), plus a small electric heater for really cold nights. By my estimates, this will be large enough for me to have at least 50-60 flats of plants - could be double if I went with shelves above the benches, which I'm not doing right away. I'm hoping to grow enough heirloom tomato seedlings to sell in the spring and pay for the cost to build it. Anything I sell in succeeding years is "gravy". The film I purchased is enough to re-do the GH once, and by all accounts, this film should last 4 years.
I would have loved to buy a kit, but I just couldn't justify the expense the first time out. By the time I outgrow this one, or it wears out, I'll know a lot more about what I want in the next one.
Hope this helps - post your questions, and we can at least commiserate together! Carol7 is also building one, she's a lot farther along than I am.
I want one too! Does Santa really deliver green houses? I wonder............

I think he'd have a heck of a time not only getting down the chminey with one..yet the hardest part, I would think, is dragging it up on the roof in the first place??? R.Rose
