CLOSED: Downy Woodpecker

Aurora, CO(Zone 4a)

We began seeing Downy Woodpeckers last July when we first started putting out suet feeders. The first two photos are from that time period. During the last couple of weeks of bitter cold and snow, this guy in the next three photos began showing up. I know it's a Downy, but he looks smaller, and the red crest is much more prominent. Very feisty little bird, and tremendously entertaining. I wonder if this is a juvie?

Oh man. Gender didn't occur to me with these guys. I have now developed an affection for Downy males. He's got this great threatening look with his spiky tough guy hairdo. Very captivating performer.
