CLOSED: Okra seeds

Staten Island, NY(Zone 6a)

I am trying to find Baby Bubba seeds for postage. I did not have luck with the tall types of okra , Thanks

I have never heard of it. I wish I could help you.

It's a type of dwarf type okra , if you google it you will see the plant.

I gave it a look. Very interesting.

Just curious... what would cause a dwarf
variety to be more likely to succeed ?

Staten Island, NY(Zone 6a)

If you google it you will see it produces okras in a shorter time than the regular ones.I live in the north and okra needs lots of heat and we get really hot from July and sept starts to get cool . So I think this might be better for me to grow

Anna, IL(Zone 6b)

Have you tried the vining okra?

Sorry, I also grow the tall okra and usually save seed for the next year. It is a great height for harvesting - no back bending for long periods of time. I sometimes grow the vining. I, too have not heard of the Baby Bubba.

Good luck........

Hi brendak654,can you send me some Vining okra seeds?I will like to try them.

Brendak654,How early do you start your okra seeds in zone 6b?

Anna, IL(Zone 6b)

I usually start my okra seed planting in a row in the garden as soon as the ground has warmed - May - May 15th. I don't like to plant it real early. It like hot weather.

Thanks brendak654,do you get a lot of okras ?. Do you soak the seeds before or do you nick them? For a couple of years I tried sowing indoors , they sprouted well but only one plant grew well .Last year I bought plants from the garden center and I had the best results by growing one in a slop sink.

Anna, IL(Zone 6b)

I have never nicked or soaked the okra seed before planting. I work up the ground with a tiller. Then, I make me a row. I make a little furrow, in the row, with my hoe handle and sprinkle the seed about and inch apart down the furrow in the row. Then I use a rake and spread a little dirt on top of the seed. Not to plant too deep. I don't pat it down. It takes a little while to sprout and come up, but I always seem to get a good stand. Again - it likes hot summers. Once it gets going and starts producing - it will produce until frost if you keep the weeds under control and keep the okra picked off.
