CLOSED: Hairy or Downy?

Willis, TX(Zone 8b)

I think Hairy, but not quite sure, so would appreciate any help to ID. I have never seen a Hairy WP in this area. I see a lot of Downy Woodpeckers, but this one looked larger with a larger bill.

Photographed 16 Dec 2014 about 80 miles north of Houston, Texas in a heavily wooded area with mostly pine and some hardwood.

I agree with Hairy. It has the "shoulder spur" and no black marks on the white tail feathers.

Chillybean,

Thanks so much! I didn't know about the shoulder spurs. That helps a lot to give me one more clue.

You're welcome. I have gotten to the point of relying on that shoulder spur because I do not always have something to compare size with and the bill size throws me off at times. :)

?? I do not understand your comment. Woodpeckers do not damage my home and I love the sound of their drumming.

I have not clicked on the link since it seems a bit strange to me. As far as I know, oovatu is a website that just looks for clicks to promote advertising, but I could be wrong.

It's a spam post. I'll report it to Admin.
