Looking for Cat Thyme.
Does anyone have any seeds, or even a small [volunteer] plant for postage.
Seeds are not easy to come by in the US.
Thanks in advance,
Terese
CLOSED: Wanted: Teucrium marum seeds
Tcs, I don't have any seeds or plants but had to look it up because it's new to me. I found seeds at this site; http://www.rarexoticseeds.com/en/teucrium-marum-seeds-cat-thyme-seeds.html
and plants here; http://www.morningsunherbfarm.com/product_info.php?products_id=410
I don't know if either source will pan out, but worth a look if all else fails. The growing zone info I found was pretty much all over the board.
Yes, that is the site i found that had them. Min. order of $15 ... i actually had the shopping cart filled with seeds to get me to 15.
I'm at the tail end of a swap and I wish I would have known about these seeds a month ago, I would have ordered....
Just didnt know if anyone had them. I even went thru the Who has and Who wants these seeds... the seedman is out too.
I still may end up purchasing some... Thanks for responding.
Terese

I thought he was out.
Ahhhh -- packet and gram still available.
Obliqua -- thanks for digging up that info.
I currently don't have the time to go thru Seedmans site... but eventually I'll see if i can find more than just the 1 seed to make shipping worth while.

Robin -- when I get back to FLA [I've been away for a while in IL] I will look into getting some of these seeds... I think with having cats, this is a must have plant.
I plan to grow them in our courtyard in a large pot where the kitties can sleep or romp around.
~~ Will leave this thread "open" for a while.
end up getting seeds from a gal in the swap who got them from JL hudson.
well, the seeds I got... not one germinated. Tried in 3 different containers....
so I was searching the internet for plants... there is a company in Cali, but their shipping was really too high for my tastes... then I found Companion Plants in Ohio... seems they are rated in the top5 of Watch Dog -- so i felt really good ordering from them.
ordered 8 plants, 2 of which were the Cat Thyme and they arrived today.
prices and shipping was pretty reasonable.
I just recently saw Companion Plants, they looked good with reasonable prices. Are the plants a good size and healthy?
i thought so... in a bit, i'll run out and take a pic of hte plants.
very nicely packaged too,
took these images on my phone, so not the best....
there is a group shot:
2) Salvia Elegans - PineApple Sage
2) Teucrium marum - Cat Thyme
2) Lobelia cardinalis - Cardinal Flower
1) Valeriana officinalis
1) Eupatorium purpureum - Joe Pye Weed
a shot of the cat thyme
a shot of the Pineapple Sage
The pots were 2x2 square by probably 4" tall.
most plants were $4-6 and shipped was based on how many plants purchased - my S/h was $17 and my total order was 58.50
Well, that was really nice of you Tcs, thanks for the extra effort! The plants look great, however; the shipping sounds a little steep. Is it? I hope they grow beautifully for you (still have my eye out for the cat thyme).
I wonder why your seeds didn't germinate, that was disheartening.
Robin -- I had picked out 5 plants... then saw the s/h went up to 8 or 9
so I increased my order to [help] justify the shipping.
the other place in Cali that had Cat thyme, the price per plant was a lil higher but s/h was $38 !! my plant order wasn't even that high... so i kept looking til I found "companion"
The plants have perks up since yesterday. I'll plant out early next week.
I did get the seeds from JL Hudson seeds. I have had them growing for two months, and they are about an inch tall, very slow grower!!!!
obliqua... how did you grow them, under lights? Did you have to cold strat them? that was one thing I did not do.
i was really bummed the seeds did not germinate.
one thing I have to say about the plants... WOW are they pungent. Hope the kitties love it. I plan to put at least 1 of them in the court yard where the cats roam freely [they can't in the back yard -- gators and the sort]
I grew the seeds under lights. They germinated pretty fast. But now they are so slow.
I tried an experiment with my 5 cats. I cut off a few leafs from the little plants and squashed them a little, I let my cats smell the leafs and not one seemed to be interested. I have cats that love fresh catnip, but this stuff does not attract them in it's fresh state. You may have to dry it to get the full effect???? This is new to me.
not sure... it's new to me too. Haven't let the cats sniff the plants yet, but Charlie was sniffin' the box when it came in the house.... once I test it, I'll post back.
My cats are very attracted to the dried Nepeta cataria. There's only a mild attraction to the actively growing plant in the garden. Different pats for different cats?
Charlie -- our oldest, he's 6.... loves both, he eats the fresh leaves off the shrub and goes crazy for dried... sometimes rolling in it... can't leave a bag laying around.
my son's cat, he loved the cat grass... i'd bring in a pot and he'd start squeeking - etc. so yes... they all have different "faves".
Our newest Bailey... i'm not sure what her fave is yet.
My plants are just too small to dry, at this point. I remember when I was planting the seeds, my cats were attracted to the seed scent???? So drying may be the way????
My cats love all grass. I often pull grass that is in the wrong place, and put it in a pot for my cats.
I have catnip growing in my garden, I have one cat that goes out on a leash, he loves to smother the entire plant.
Lol, its hard to grow a plant that gets continually rolled on. On the other hand, sometimes sacrifice is the worth the price of admission. I love watching my cats play.
Happy Easter all!
that's why I get multiple plants. I currently have 3 potted "nip" plants grown from seed, so none of them are that big yet but big enough to chew on... so I keep rotating them. Oh, and 2 pots of cat grass....
I purchased a valerian too, only to find it does not do well [survive] here in FL. Guess it may have to come to WI with me this summer.
Happy Easter....
