Hi, Gaillardias do not come true from seed that are open (bee) pollinated. I know that from experience. However, a handful of seeds will give you many different colors that you can pick from. Although I like them, I don't grow them any more for they are seed weedy. My daughter allows them to grow and reseed to keep the soil from blowing. She gets quite a mix of colors.
You can buy seeds of the maroon, and dwarf Goblin in stores. They have been pollinated under strict growing conditions and do come true from seed. A package of mixed colors will yield many colors.
I had Fanfar growing from a small crack in my driveway as a volunteer. It sprouted on its own from seeds of the plants I had growing. I tried to save it but couldn't get the roots out. There are no seeds for Fanfare either. It is only obtained as a plant from divisions. It is one of Mother Nature's miracle.
I think for every new color, nurseries gives them names so gardeners will buy them.
1] the ones I grew from 1 package of commercial seeds.
2] Dwarf 'Goblin' grows to 12"
3] the Fanfar that grew in my driveway.

I discovered Gaillardias this year when I bought my first one and it was a winner...ever blooming all summer til NOW! I DID save seeds from it, and it's, I beleive, the "goblin" variety. I dont really care what they look like...getting a variety of colors from seeds would be even better as far as I'm concerned. I want to plant more of them, though as I was really impressed with their blooming power.
Someone mentioned to me that they didnt think they would overwinter will in my zone. I see you are colder (4 vs. 5) zone than I am, and do yours come back, or do you reseed each year?

They are hardy and come back every year, including seedlings if you allow them to drop their seeds. They are hardy from zone 4 and southwards.
Below photos are from my daughter wild growing Gaillardias. I gave her my plants and they took it from there. These are growing all along the long side of her house on the South side. They bloom all summer long. I help her cut them down in the Fall when they stopped blooming for a neater appearance.
If you plant seed from Goblin, you will get the taller Gaillardias. At least that happened to me. All are hybrids, the reason they don't come true from seeds. However, what comes up is a variety of colors. More colors when they drop their seeds and often the petals can be curled and tubed on some. That is how Fanfar came about.

I didnt see a mix offered at the 3 places I ordered seeds from this fall. I probably wont order 1-2 packets with the shipping at this point just to get a mix, but do you remember where you bought your mix?

Yes I bought the Gaillardia seeds at Walmart. They usually put out the seeds in March here in WY
K-Mart should have them in the Spring also. Any store that sells seeds would. It is one that is always included in seed stands.
You may want to check now for I know Walmart will discount their seeds in the Fall to get rid of them, rather them send them back.
We dont have a Kmart locally, but I will definitely check Walmart! Thanks for the tip, Blomma
A discount store (local chain) had seeds in Nov, but I found I either had or didnt want what their selection offered....I did buy my herb seeds from them. I noticed the seed display was GONE in December, but they will probably pull it back out.
I did check out Walmart's selection of seeds in the earlier fall, but most were also things I had already bought as far as perennials, their perennial selection was very minimal. I'll check out the new crop in Feb/March or so. I figured Home Depot and Lowes would also have a selection of seeds out and I'd check when they put them out.
valal I am sure you will find Gaillardia seeds when the seeds are available for Spring sowing. Pgk of Gaillardia seeds are always included in the seed stand. Home Depot does also carry seeds.
I am not sure but I think I purchased G. 'Goblin' from Walmart also. It is the dwarf 12" type. It is the 4th photo. The others came in the same pkg
I keep forgetting to mention that Gaillardias are cut-and-come-again type, meaning they make great cut flowers. The more you cut the more it will bloom. The seeds heads can be cut off and the plant trimmed back somewhat for a good flush of bloom and to prevent that raggedy look later in the summer.

The source that I use for Wlidflower Seeds is Wildseeds Farms in Fredericksburg, TX. The website is www.wildseedfarms.com. They give instructions on when to sow the seeds in your area and have small and large quantities. I have been known to shop at the big box stores too. Lol Down here these seeds are sown in the fall/winter. They offer seed mixes/blends for certain areas and other mixes as well as single species.
