It is like a small flock filling up on seed from the garden and I'm wondering what it is?

I think it is a House Finch, but you could have Purple Finches in your area in the winter and I don't know how to tell the difference. ^_^ So, wait for the experts.

Thanks Patti. I saw the little bit of red near the head and I am like you - not sure how to tell the difference. I don't think they are here all the time - thought maybe they were migrating through.

Yep, House Finch. A male Purple would have a purple back as well as purple head.
