Broodies

Bridgewater, ME

Why do chickens want to be broody this time of year> Its getting cold here, we have already had two frosts, and I have 10 silkie broodies!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Trying to put eggs under all of them so they will hatch them out and hopefully that will be the end of it till next spring.Trying to get them all moved into another coop but in the same coop,so as they go broody I put them over there so the babies will be born in the new coop.I have some sitting on golf balls till my buff eggs are shipped then they will get real eggs, lol

Chickens also choose to molt in the fall so they can go into winter with only half of their feathers - illogical creatures!

That's right porkpal,I forgot about that.it might be fine in the warmer states but not here in northern Maine, lol

I think the logic is the same as for shearing sheep when still freezing- an animal responds to the cold by growing their new clothes much faster.
