Hey, does anybody out there know if those brown paper feed sacks that rolled oats come in are ok for the compost. They appear to be just three seperate thick brown paper sacks put together. They don't look to be treated with anything, and they don't feel waxy, etc. I've got a bunch of them stacked up, and I would sure like to tear them up for the compost while I'm watching TV rather than stuff them into trash bags.
Feed sacks good for compost?
They are fine- the strings and that strip they r sewn with arent good,
They will be slower to decompose than other paper, they are quite tough. I use them as the base of a bed to keep grass out. There isn't anything wrong with them.
Thanks to both. I just brought some up this evening. I thought I'd tear them in strips while I'm resting after lunch tomorrow. Wish I could figure out how to use them in my garden. I loved it when I started my garden two (3?) years ago, putting down the newspapers, coffee grounds and soil. There have been no weeds until this year, and then just a few, very shallow rooted ones until the squash leaves got big enough to shade the ground. I would love to put these sacks down under that dirt, but I don't have a tractor to scrape it over to one side, and I don't even want to think about doing it with a shovel.
You can use between your garden rows (just like newspapers or cardboard) with a shovel full of mulch over to keep them anchored. No need to bury unless you just have extra energy to spare...
Steve
Thanks, TXSkeeter. And I have noooo idea what EXTRA energy would look like. ;*)
Hey Sybil, get yourself over to the Fall Round Up pages when you find that extra time. Hope you make it too TXSkeeter.

You've got me thinking about all the grass weeds I have in my garden this year and all the feed bags I also have. I'm now thinking of putting the feed bags on the soil and cutting holes in them for the seedlings. I've never had weeds like this before and it's worth a try, I think...
Yeah, let me know how that works out 1lisac, if you do it.
Sheila, I've planned all along to come to the fall swap--so looking forward to it. However, I realized today that it is the same Sunday as my church anniversary celebration. There will be so many people there from times past--especially those involved with our music ministry throughout the years that I just CANNOT miss it. It'll be a real special Sunday with dinner on the grounds, lots of music and visiting with old friends.
So, .....................I'll see you guys in the spring.
That sounds like a great day you have planned. See you in the spring then.
