I resolved to learn about gardening after disappointing experiences with local commercial gardening concerns. After stumbling around the 'Net these past 3 summers in search of pertinent gardening information, I found this site and cobbled together the first pot for my new container garden. (I must have done something right, because the newly-divided daylilies have already re-established themselves and started renewed shoot growth!).
I have 4 small flower gardens:
#1 filtered sunlight: one third due to be planted later this month as a layered spring bulb garden (crocus, tulips, daffodils)
#2 full sun: Oriental lilies, praying hands hosta, Girard's purple azalea, Light 0' Day hydrangea, lantana, beardstongue
#3 transitional/spring-only full sun - thanks to a big oak tree: due to be planted next month as a square of naturalized daffodils ringed by grape hyacinths
#4 filtered sun/partial shade/total shade): helleborus sp., white daphne, aucuba, Ghost Lady Fern
Now my first three questions: in my transitional garden, the daffodils to be planted are all bulbs I had dug up and cured (per a university's horticulture web site) and the body of the bulbs vary from 1 to 3 inches. The recommended planting depth I've found is 2-3 times the height of the bulb.
If I plant all at the same (recommended) depth of 6", would the smaller bulbs die? Should I sort them by size and plant at different depths? How would I do this, for a naturalized planting??
Hello from North Carolina foothills
Hi, and welcome to davesgarden! Your gardens sound beautiful. The Welcome Mat forum doesn't get used much, unfortunately, so you would be better off posting your questions in the Bulb forum here: http://davesgarden.com/community/forums/f/bulbs/all/
There are lots of friendly, experienced people there who would know how to advise you. I don't know much about bulbs--sorry. Enjoy our website!
Thanks KY!! I just posted my daffodil questions in the Bulbs forum.
Why does this post (yesterday's) show up as "New" but the one I just posted says "No"? Am I over-looking something I should have done ??
I don't know, where does it say "New" and "No"?
if you click on Home .... watched posts (and posts in watched forums) have either a red "New!" or black "No" to the left of each post
(that is, if you set up "Preferences")
Oh, that means there's a new post for you to read. It probably said "New" after I replied, but not after you replied back, because it was your own post.
oh! I see! Thanks again KY!
