pruneing questions

Hi all, I have many hibs, all hardy, that got very tall and bloomed profusely. So after they finished blooming I cut them back and hoped they would bloom again. So far, no new shoots. Can you prune hibs and if so when. Mine have never gotten so large. Thanks for any advise. Alda
