Is anyone sowing melon or pumpkin (small variety) seeds now? Or have I missed the boat for them? I did read a few planting calendars that say til august 15 but not sure what everyone else is doing.
Any melon growing tips or tricks are welcome here also :)
Melons, pumpkins now?
I just sowed pumpkin seeds yesterday. It's a little later then I would have like but better then nothing. Lol What kind of melons are you thinking about growing? I have watermelon and cantaloupe that have been growing since spring. None of the watermelon are ripe yet but we have picked a few cantaloupe and there are a lot more on the vine. I'd say go for it...there is no way of telling when the first frost will hit and if it only lasts one or two days you can always cover the plants until the temps go up again.
You know Lisa, I've had my seeds pulled and ready to go, made my plant labels for them, have had them ready to plant for a solid month. But I have been so freaking tied up with other gardening tasks (mostly tomato related LOL), I've been procrastinating, figuring I still have time. "Tomorrow Syndrome", I call it..
Well I looked up my frost date again and realized I'm down to less than 100 days! I immediately removed certain seeds with DTM over 85-90 days. So that was bye bye to some white pumpkins, "vegetable spaghetti" squash, moon and starts melons, and warty pumpkins.
What I still have in the pack are crimson sweet watermelon, kiwano horned melon, ananas d' amerique melon, and I've added lemon squash, and mexican sour gherkins which have real short DTMs. I'll work in some compost this Saturday while I ponder whether or not I should just I any my current seeds and replant the whole thing with sweet corn again!! You know, since the grasshoppers greedily ate my last attempt.. I really want some of my own homegrown corn!!
I swear I hope I grow out of this fearful gardener/ Mrs. Wishy washy thing soon!! Thanks for the nudge -- and letting me vent! Lol
Becky, I suggest you GO FO IT !!!
After all, this is TEXXXXXXASSSSSS.
Those pesky frost dates are suggested and
not absolute. Some years it frosts very late,
and some years not at all.
And past a certain point in the plant's growth,
frost will not affect certain cucurbits at all,
especially pumpkins.
Whaaaa?? Baja I could kiss you!! Okay It's too late to plant today so TOMORROW it is!! Aaaaaagh LOL tomorrow syndrome strikes again!!
I sowed seeds that have a 100 DTM. Id rather try then have a late freeze and wish I had. Lol. Sowing seeds takes so little time I don't even bother with garden tags I figure I'll know which on it is when it produces fruit. Sometimes I will use them so I know where I have sowed the seed. Lol This year the weeds/grass have taken over my garden to the point where I give up. Just when I think they are gone we get a downpour and there they are again. They are even coming up in my raised beds, so I give up. At least this year the veggie plants are doing as well as the weeds.
True that Lisa, I'm going for it! And I'm too OCD to not to make plant tags, I'd be out there twitching while trying to ID vines LOL
just try to remember what section you plant each thing in or make notes
also, after you started this conversation, that song that talks about
"frost on the pumpkin" started going on and on in my mind.... and pumpkins are considered a winter veg, and can be left in the field till you need them...
