CLOSED: Johnson County Texas raptor 8/10/14

Fort Worth, TX(Zone 8a)

I'm not sure why, but I'm confused by this bird. It was in a plowed field area. I did not see it, but a friend took the photos. It could be a juvie something that is throwing me off, but I have looked in several ID books at all of the most likelys, juvies included, and I'm coming up blank. If you think you know it, please, describe the id process for me. Thanks!

How about a juvenile Swainson's Hawk? If your friend is also in Fort Worth, this would be in range for summer.

I could be wrong on this ID, but the facial pattern, scalloped back and the tip of the wings extending to the end of the tail seem to line up with a Swainson's. I am looking at a Sibley's Guide for Eastern NA.

I'm leaning towards your id Chillybean. My friend is in Johnson County, just southwest of Fort Worth. I asked him if he had any other photos and he sent me this one. It clearly shows the dark trailing flight feathers and the dark bib of the Swainson's!

Yep, agree juv. Swainson's, for the same reasons; the long wings are the most important.
