Gathering wildflower seed

Teague, TX

One of the few good things about August in Texas is that many of the spring and summer wildflower seeds are maturing and ready for harvest. Today, I gathered American basket flower, Silver bluestem and lanceleaf prairie gaillardia. I would love to hear from those who also reap the harvest of the wilds. The basket flower seeds are visible in the pod as black specs The pictures show bluestem seed ready when easily stripped from the stem. This particular stand of basket flower was especially purple and I had kept my eye on this roadside fence protected from the mowers. I have had great success sowing seed in my two quarter acre pocket prairies Happy hunting! I

"Pocket prairies?" Did you make that up or is it somebody's copyright? It's a great term. :)

No, lol, it`s a fairly common public domain phrase. It does describe what I try to do, though.

Guilty of collecting. So far asclepias viridis,& red gaillardia, -not sure if I am going to get the chance to grab any asclepias syriaca but I am eyeballing them hard. As yet tho I play Johnny wildseed and redistribute...my range is a bit haphazard, many plants I could collect wont survive the zone changes...

kittriana, where are talking that you could collect? I`m interested. I sometimes try to bring back trans pecos stuff to teague, some actually make it.

I drive 18 wheels. At the moment I am locked into runs taking me north from Houston to Wis, east to Pennsylvania and occasionally south to Florida, and return to do it over. From Tulsa
this time over to Ill so far. If roads are too small I have nowhere to pull over though. I did just grab some passiflora incarnata from Atlanta to add to my Houston area- forgot those....they are still ripening in paper bags at home.

Postoaksavannah, you so got my attention with this thread!😃

I love love collecting and redistributing wildflower seed (and lots of the same ones you mentioned)! I live an hour west of Fort Worth in a rural area with a lot of natural prairie areas mixed in among farm acreage. My favorite thing to do is collect and reseed areas, and am planning on creating a certified wildlife habitat over the next few years. "Pocket prairie" is the perfect term for what I hope to achieve!

I've snagged alot of native seed so far this summer.. Wild foxglove, blanketflower, yarrow, vitex, texas yellowstar, and just scored some globe berry vine fruits today! Let me know of you're ever interested in trading, there are some species I just cannot find here and I'm sure vice versa. Happy gardening, my seedy friends ;))

Out collecting again yesterday, found Blanket flower, Illinois bundle flower, Lemon mint, Hookers eryngo, and Mullein. Unfortunately, most of the Texas yellow star has dropped seed already. I also stripped some Silver bluestem seed. I`ve been working on an area ridding it of bahia.

Postoak, if you're looking for yellowstar seed, I can send you some or give it to you at RU if you plan on coming :)

Haven't been able to go flower hunting recently, too busy, well that and the lack of rain has made most plants go dormant. Maybe last nights rain will help that.

Is there a difference between hookers eryngo and eryngo leavenworthii? We have e. Leavenworthii here but wondering if maybe it's a synonym?
