What kind of rooster?

(Zone 6b)

Any idea what kind of rooster this is?

A woman I know in IL bought chicks of unknown origin and this is how he grew out. I think his tail is sometimes longer.

Thanks,
Karen

I don't know what breed or breeds he is, but he certainly is a handsome fellow!

(Zone 6b)

Thanks Porkpal.

When she was describing him to me I thought maybe he was a Phoenix or a Longtail. He doesn't look like the Silver Phoenix I've seen though. He could be a Longtail I guess. I'm no expert on them.

She calls him Road Runner because he is able to run really really fast, he reminds them of a road runner. They lose many of their flock to predators, but Road Runner has survived several years without mishap.

I just thought maybe someone on here might know what kind of rooster she has. She asked me but I just don't know. He looks like pictures of some roosters I've seen before, but I just can't place him.

The comb is wrong for a Phoenix - unless it has been trimmed ?

(Zone 6b)

I'm sure it wasn't trimmed. Porkpal you are quite the expert. I wasn't even looking at the comb really. I was just looking at the shape and color of the bird.

(Zone 6b)

Okay, you have me looking at websites that show the different types of combs, and I still don't know what his is.

What kind of comb does he have?

Richmond, TX

I think that is a rose comb. The only breed that I know that has a rose comb, white ears and dark legs that can be a silver color is the Hamburg. I don't think they have extra long tails. Could he be a cross?

Magnolia, TX(Zone 9a)

He could be one of the more modern day phoenix, or silver penciled types. I thought at first he was a frost grey. Ummm, the phoenix are supposed to be very friendly and protective in attitude. Am goin to have to look for your Longtail breed...

Magnolia, TX(Zone 9a)

Hmmm. interesting breed Longtails. Stance is correct. If not a cross- i believe rose combs do show up in some breeds naturally.

Richmond, TX

I think "longtail" is a generic term which can refer to any number of breeds with exceptional tail feathers. Maybe he is just a Phoenix with a funky comb.

(Zone 6b)

Yes, Porkpal, he could be a cross.

(Zone 6b)

Porkpal, you are so observant! I wasn't noticing any of the things you mentioned, but you are right. He has white earlobes and dark legs. You really are the chicken expert. I've seen Hamburgs before and love their spots. Very nice birds. I was telling her what you said. She is going to try and sell him at a flea market near Galesburg, IL. She wants to know what she should ask for him. You see, he is attacking her family members and they have had enough of him. Guess he is a regular rascal. She is afraid that whoever buys him will just eat him. I guess that is the way it goes for bad roosters that chase people around and flog them. Still, it is a shame, because he is a lovely looking boy.

(Zone 6b)

When I posted this, I didn't know why she was asking me what he was. I thought she just wanted to know.

Still, it was a nice little educational trip looking up LongTails. It was a good reminder to look at obvious characteristics too like combs, earlobes and leg color.

I just always get involved with the overall look of the bird, and forget to pay attention to details.

I'll be sure and tell her, she'll be so happy to hear. She wants to keep him so badly and is trying to figure out how she's going to do it.

Good to see you back. Missed you.

I just saw this thread, yeah i'm slow...;lol. Our dear friend Eufaula is correct, He is a Yokahama. I had three of those about three months before I cleaned out my stock. Here is a picture of my favorite Serama and his girls. The girls I got from ZZ's babiez. The rooster I hatched and raised. His name was maximus. This rooster was the best bird I ever had he would sometimes spend the whole day with me and my wife said he and I were closer than her and I. Don't believe it,,,she is a spoiled woman...lol. Haystack BTW Whatever happened to ZZ's I sure miss her alot. Hey Eufaula I miss you to, Please stop by more often...Pleeeeeeeeeeeze. Hay
