Spagheti Squash

How can I tell when my spaghetti squash is ready to harvest?

It has to do with the stem and skin hardness usually - i need to go read up on the advises tho- as I havent grown these.

Thanks, Kitt. I went ahead and picked the largest one, just because it didn't look like it had grown any in about a week. Thought that could have been because I had mega company from Wednesday thru Monday last week, and my watering did suffer. It was delicious! So sweet. I've read they will keep in the house for a few weeks, and I'm so glad, because there seem to be a gazillion of those little buggers out there. I think I only planted four hills, but they've run everywhere.

Most winter squash ( vining) are picked when the skin is too hard to be punctured by your thumb nail. If it tasted good that was obviously the right time! Lol

Did anybody else here plant spaghetti squash this year? It seems that they MIGHT get a little lighter in color as they mature. Not sure, though, because some of the smaller ones (but not most) are a little speckled with green. Most start and stay a pale yellow. My squash seem to be confused, anyway. One yellow squash hill has given me a couple of zukes, and some just can't make up their mind what they are. I've had yellow squash that were zukes for a couple of inches on both ends. I'm a newbie veggie farmer, so maybe that's norman. Seems like utter confusion to me, but they are kinda cute. ;*)

Looks like they are confused as to whether they zukes or spaghetti squash. But it is pretty.

Had a zuke that was yellow with pale green ends this summer. Its a new one and dont remember name... Also squashes planted too close together cross pollinate with each other and the fruits are wierd. Gotta keep em seperated if different varieties!!!

Yeah, it's the zukes and yellow squash that are mixed up. I don't care, since I can't see why it would matter (not entering them at the fair or anything like that, lol).

My DH was sick all last week, and I did good to keep things watered. I surely did not "hunt and pick" enough, though, as evidenced by two zukes I brought in today weighing in at over 3# each. I'm dehydrating them in the oven right now. Making guacamole tomorrow to eat with zucchini chips. Yummmm.
