Female House Finch with yellow chin?

Aurora, CO(Zone 4a)

I noticed what looks like a yellow chin on this bird when I was taking photos. Is it my imagination? Is it mustard? Your feedback will be appreciated.

It's a male 'yellow-variant' House Finch, where the normal red is replaced by yellow. Probably an immature (1 year old) as the yellw [red] isn't very extensive.

We have the occasional orange fellow here. They are fun to see when we have the winter doldrums. :)

I'm very glad to know this. There's a red fellow among our massive number of finches who puts on a spectacular mating display [see photo] and we've developed an affection for him. As far as we knew, he was the only male among all of the finches. He had vanished for a couple of weeks, and when he returned with three red guys who had that fuzzy cutie pie look, we assumed they were his progeny. And I've noticed their red isn't as extensive. I had photographed one of them earlier & didn't notice the tiny bit of yellow mixed in with the red [see photo]. Thanks so much for enlightening me, as I won't be so perplexed if I ever see a yellow-variant house finch that's yellow all over.

I have lots of red male House Finches and would love to snap a pic of the yellow form.

I wonder if one will visit Cols, GA.?

Amazingly, all of Red's recent male offspring have spatters of yellow where the red would be. Very young, fuzzy, adorable babies all. Spotted one that that was all over yellow in place of red, but missed getting his photo. Have been watching for him since. They seem to like Denver.

The coloring of the male finches is caused from what they eat. I think I linked to this before, but click on Yellow House Finches for more info about it.

Wingwoman, your third picture is so cute with his head cocked to the side that that. :)

Thanks Chillybean. I post all lot of my photos based on how freaking adorable those babies can be, or how stunning a particular bird can be on a wire, with the early morning sun shining through his wings. Or when I see my favorite male finch, Red, teaching his boy how to invade a sparrow feeder.
