CLOSED: Is this a male or female.

This is our neighborhood owl. We have never seen two owls. Has two chicks that are flying with it. This owl is about 15" high and very wide. It has been in our greenbelt area now for about 2 years. Comes and goes. We are right off of the golf course so there is a high abundance of rabbits and birds for food.

Thanks for your assistance.

Great Horned Owl. Not sexable without taking detailed measurements (which needs a special license to catch it, and a lot of training to get it ;-)

Thanks Resin. Who takes care of the babies? This one has two small ones that are flying with it in the early afternoon and you can hear them close by when it is hunting.

BTW, I would not get even close to this owl. Good think I have a good zoom lens. I am just glad he is taking care of a few rats that sneak into our area from the golf course.

Both parents. While the chicks are small, the male does the hunting and gives the prey to the female who looks after and feeds the chicks, but by the time the young fledge, both parents are out hunting.

Thank you again Resin. You are such a great resource. The owl we took the photo of was with the fledglings and it was in the grass in the green belt tearing up a bird it had captured for dinner. The chicks were very eager for dinner because they were making a big racket.

I am trying to picture little owlets doing this and can imagine it looking cute/funny. We've got Barn Swallows above our front door and they are calm and quiet... until a parent comes with food. Such noisy, boisterous things, but they are so cute about it.

Chillybean, I had a nest of Robins in my front landscape and did not even know it until I was out after dark checking the landscape lighting a few weeks back and heard the racket. They were in a short 8' palm tree, right next to the gate going into the courtyard.

I have not seen the owlets except high in the sky. We can hare them but cannot spot them. They seems to prefer the pine trees. And we quit going to see them because we did not want to scare them away.

Photos are robins. There are 3 Chicks. They fledged last week. If you look close at the nest you can see some of my silver dichondra on the outside of the nest.
