Is the a bromeliad? It grows like a weed near my son's home in Kailua, HI. I would love to find this to buy in Florida!

Yes it is a bromeliad. It looks like a Neoregelia of some kind of hyb.

Certainly looks like one of the Neoregelia hybrids. Here is one I grow a lot of and it is now starting to turn color, becoming a rich, burgundy when it gets some sun or a pink/burgundy when it gets little sun.

Thank you all for the replies. I absolutely love this orange one and would like to try and grow it here. Where could I find this particular one? And, would it grow here in Jacksonville, FL? Sorry for so many questions, but it has become a quest for me to find this plant. I wish I could pack a suitcase full of them to bring back when I am in HI, but that is a no no. Thanks again for you help.

I think I might have found out what this is. I started searching your suggestions and found a place in Ft Meyers called Seabreeze Nurseries. After looking at all their photos, I found this: Aechmea blanchetiana 'Orange Aid'. Hopefully these will grow in Jacksonville. Guess I will be making a long drive to Ft Meyers in the next few weeks. Maybe I will schedule it to coincide with the Caladium Festival that is coming up. Thank you everyone again for pointing me in the right direction!!

I have approximately 100 bromeliad plants here in NE Mississippi. Jacksonville would have even better growing conditions than what I have. My problem is that I have to bring them all inside before the first heavy frost and they will all over-winter in greenhouses until spring. You do get freezes in Jacksonville, so you would have to either bring yours in or protect it/them some way.

Thanks Ken for the info. There is a man here who has many bromeliads in his 1+ acre garden. I am hoping he will allow a tour of his gardens. I saved a news article about his garden and hope to make contact with him. I can't imagine how beautiful your 100 plants must be!

I hope you can tour his grounds. It sounds like it would be beautiful. My main passion is orchids, and I have about 300 of those. I also grow staghorn and elkhorn ferns, fiddle leaf ficus, tillandsia, and plumeria. Those are just my tropical plants. I will send you a D-Mail and give you my website. The Admin doesn't like for me to show it for the public to see.

Thank you Ken for the D-mail. You have quite the extensive inventory. I am hoping to make contact with the man with all the tropical plants and bromeliads in his garden. I was just in Kailua, HI recently and saw many beautiful plumeria in full bloom. I have one in a pot that is about 2 feet tall, but no blooms yet. I just planted it up last year.

BTW Ken, I love your Cattleya Royal Beau 'Ali'. It is such a beautiful color!

I agree on the Aechmea blanchetiana though I'm not familiar with that cultivar. It's grown a lot in Hawaii as a landscape ornamental and is one of the very few Aechmeas that can take full sun (as long as the humidity is high). Most often it's more yellow than red in strong light.
