First ever grown caladiums

Pasco, WA(Zone 6b)

I am so excited! I have never grown caladiums before and needed something for an area with too much shade for my usual sunny plants. So many of my trees and evergreens have grown so much that what used to be full sun has turned into a ton of shade. Some of my plants need to be moved for this reason....but just the thought of all the transplanting!!! Ugh! Anyhow, here are the first 2 caladiums to poke through the ground. I have several more and just hope they show up soon. They were just bought at Walmart, but looked healthy so thought I'd give them a try.

Well, only one picture showed up. Here is the other one. Please excuse the tag in front of the other one. Just used them to mark where I planted them until they came up so I could find them. LOL

I think caladiums give a lot for no more than they cost. I tried planting in the ground but I have better luck with them in pots. I have to really keep an eye on mine or cover with netting until they come up. The squirrels like to dig them up and they leave them lying around nearby but they don't eat them, they just like to dig I guess or maybe they are curious.

The white ones really perk up a shade bed. I love the look. Congrats on your pretty ones. Enjoy!

I love caladiums but have never grown them! They are a very popular shade bulb here in the South. Maybe i'll try some this Fall.😊

Sherry the caladiums are a great idea. I used to have some when I lived where it was hot, but here in Seattle they just can't get going. Pasco should be perfect. I drool when I see them in the greenhouses-so lush and colorful.

Well, they are shooting out of the ground even more now! I'm just not sure how big or thick the area will get. I hope thick and pretty! You never know until you try, right? But it's kind of a long time to wait until the middle of July for some color. This will be my experiment this summer with them. And since I knew nothing about them and just picked them up at Walmart, they probably weren't the largest bulbs. I'll keep you posted as summer progresses. ;o)

steadycam3, thanks for the info and I agree that they give a lot for the money...as long as the area gets a lot thicker that is...LOL We shall see.

bariolio, I will keep you posted as how they do for me and yes....try them! ;o)

mlmlakestevens, they should do great here, but maybe I planted them too late. But it talked so much about waiting until it was warm enough, so had to make sure of that. Can't even remember when I planted them for sure. But plenty hot enough here for them! Our weather has been crazy hot (100 to 114), but I am tired of that already!!! It is supposed to cool down into the mid 80's to high 90's until Friday, then look out. Back to the 104, 107, etc. YUCK!
