CLOSED: Bird ID please, some gulls in North California

Pittsburgh, PA

I saw these gulls in North California. Are they California Gulls? And please tell me how do they identify them, because I find all gulls look quite similar. I guess they are California Gulls because I find their legs are yellow.

Thanks,
Cui

I'll let another give you an ID on your gulls.

I'll share a little advice though. When I was asking a birder how in the world to identify gulls, their advice was to study the field guides and get out there and practice, practice, practice. :)

We just cannot get out to practice on gulls because the locations they are seen at is a bit of a drive from here, but we can practice on the native sparrows (and other birds) around here. I used to think the sparrows all looked the same, but now they are among the easiest for me to identify. There will be the occasional stumper, but for the most part, we can figure them out.

Thank you for your advice, Chillybean.

Yep, spot on! Dark eye, yellowish legs, mid-grey back & wings, yellow bill with a red spot.

The real fun starts when you're dealing with immature gulls ;-)
