CLOSED: Have Baptisia australis

Jackson, MO(Zone 6b)

I have a few Baptisia australis plants that have sprouted.

Kansas City (Joyce), MO(Zone 5a)

What are you looking for in trade?

Jackson, MO(Zone 6b)

Nothing just postage.

I think I have about a dozen. They are small. Perhaps you may want me to wait until fall to give them time to get a little bigger. On the other hand, the root is a brittle, tap root. The bigger it gets, the more difficult to transplant. Research says root needs to stay moist. I don't believe there will be a problem keeping it moist.

There's a couple of gardeners interested in getting a few Baptisia australis. I am willing to give a few to each one.

Please let me know if you would rather have these in the fall.

I would love some in the fall, if still avail

Do your plants ever set seed? Please keep me in mind if they do! :-)

Jackson, MO(Zone 6b)

Yes Chris they re-seed. I will save some seed for you. I recommend you read info regarding growing this plant from seed. It's possible. The seed needs to be planted as soon as it's ripe. So, if I send you some seed, I need to collect it right away, and you need to plant it right away.

I will stand here with my shovel in my hand at the ready :-D

Okay guys. I have some bad news regarding my Baptisia seeds. My son called from Florida--sick. So, before I left, I checked the Baptisia to see if the seed pods were ripe knowing the seed doesn't last long after they are ripe. The seed pods (like peas) were black, so I thought they were ripe. I knew I was leaving next day so hurriedly sent a few seeds to those that wanted to try seed. As I got the last pod open and packaged off, I noticed the seed in the last pod I broke open was BLACK instead of light brown. I had Already mailed off the other seed packages (as I was in a rush to get these sent to you before I left to go to Florida AND I knew the seed didn't last long after ripe).

SO, to those that rec'd brown seeds, I don't think they were ripe. So, the only person that rec'd a few of the black seeds was happgarden. She rec'd both brown and black. So, we shall see what happens to her seed (if anything).

I am so sorry I have mislead the rest of you hoping your seed was ready. I simply didn't realize the seed was not ripe.

I wanted you to know the seed did not germinate because of me and nothing you did: A dumb mistake and a learning experience.

So, now, we are back to plants, because I had to leave the following day. Had I been home, I would have sent everyone more seed. Be patient with me, and I will still try to get you plants/and/or seeds eventually.

I am thinking we should give these baby plants another year before I send them in order to give them a better chance of "making it" as they are tiny.

For those in warmer zones, fall will be better to send the plants. For those in colder zones, spring will be better.

Unless the babies die because I am not there to watch them, I WILL get them to you eventually. I will post an up date later.

Again, sorry to send you bad seed.

I would like for you to respond to let me know you rec'd my sad tale.

LOL we are in trouble now..rofl. I have never raised anything from seed! Pressure is rising... ;)
Well all I can say is they were planted as soon as I got them. They are on my potting bench where I can keep a close eye on them.

Birdie as far as I am concerned don't worry about anything. Life does happen, and I understand completely.

(Robin) Blissfield, MI(Zone 6a)

Birder, I got your seeds today, yes they are brown. Thanks so much for sending them (whether they are good or not), believe me, the thought and effort you made was worth more to me than anything. I'll give it a shot and try and germinate them regardless. If they turn out to be bad/green...not ripe, then I'm with Happgarden. Life is not perfect.

You tried and I'm grateful! THANK-YOU for trying.

I received some seed from another DG'er and planted some soon after and some I saved and planted a year later. They all sprouted. I scarified and soaked overnight in water then put them in a baggie in a wet paper towel according to the Deno method. When they sprouted, which was quickly, I planted in potting soil and kept under fluorescent light. That was last year and they are still growing (outdoors now but still in pots) and I am up potting until fall when I will plant out.

Jackson, MO(Zone 6b)

steady: thanks for sharing your experience. Do you remember whether the seeds were brown or black?

Also, they have a long "rat tail" root so I am wondering how the root is doing in the pots?

Houston Heights, TX(Zone 9a)

They don't seem to be having any difficulty in the pots but Ive not taken them out and examined them lately. I still have some seed and I will have to look at them again. My memory says they were a mix of brown and black, diff shades of brown. I'll check though and get back to you on that.

when I plant something with a long tap root, I usually dig the hole for the plant and in the bottom of the hole I punch a deep hole with an iron rod and poke the tap root down to that.

Well, that looks like the color I sent out. I guess we will see.

I have 3 stalks with fat seed pods. If anyone wants seeds, LMK. They don't look to be drying yet. My clump is 4 yrs old now. The first year it sat in a pot - got it at WI RU. By fall, I thought it was dead, left it in the garage over winter. Saw a little green in the spring so planted it the next year and it struggled, just had a couple scraggly looking stems. Last year I thought it was finally going to make it and it was a nice but smallish plant. This year, wowzers! Definitely a dead?, sleep, creep, leap plant!. lol

Well watched seeds never sprout...lol So far nothing has happened but it hasn't been very long yet. I will let you all know.
