Tall Bearded Iris 'Sable'

Concord, NC

Hi Terri,

My 'Sable' that I recieved from Colorodo that supposedly has beeen verified bloomed for the fisrt time May 14, 2014 and this is what it looks like..to me it looks different than yours. Please forgive me in advance as I dont like when people question any of my photos..but im Just trying to figure out if mine is the correct one or not. to me yours looks more like the pics of Sable Night on Wiki iris that are from the States and HIPS websites which I do not yet grow. It appears that here on Daves their is a picture of Sable NIght as the main pic for Sable and a picture of Sable as the main pic for Sable Night. If a third person grows Sable or Sable night please by all means jump in and share your pics.. Respectfully, Sandra.

Well, the one from Bluebird Haven in CA does look like Yours too, but MikeU from HIPS looks like mine. Mine came from Willowbend Farm.

Yorkshire,

Hi Sandra!

I can see what you mean about both irises.
I actually took my picture in a garden that has many irises in bloom during May/June here in the UK. I am only going by the actual label on that particular iris.

I used to grow 'Sable' myself several years ago.
From what I remember mine wasn't quite as dark as the one I photographed.

I've also found mis-labelling is very common with irises (much to my chagrin). :(

I apologize if my picture is in any way incorrect.

Misrepresentation in any way is not my intention.

Kind regards,

Terri

no worries..I wanted to ask you because you probably have been doing iris much longer than myself, and for all I knew you could have had yours a very long time and known it to be correct and the ones here in the States could have been wrong, I am also gonna submit my pics and I dont see why they cant leave both up for awhile. Im certainly not trying to say your are a misrepresentation, I just wanted to know what your take on it was before I submitted my pics. heres too shared interest and love of old heirloom iris. Respectfully Sandra.

Yorkshire,

Hi again Sandra,
That's a very good idea. If nothing else it will show others how plants can vary.

Although I have been interested in irises for many years I am, by no means, an expert.

One more factor in photographs of flowers (any flowers, not just irises), is that different cameras and light conditions can often cause color distortion and differences.
Although in this instance I believe that Sable is actually more blue-purple (like your picture) than black-purple...such as mine.
Maybe someone who 'knows' will come along and point out the correct iris.

Best regards :)

Terri

Hi Terri :-)

So I have been researching this the last few weeks and This picture and the other Sable pics appear ok enough to stay. But Your very first image thats dark royal purple with the brownish horns. http://davesgarden.com/guides/pf/showimage/7343/... It appears to be the most Beautiful Textbook perfect Example of 'Sable Night' also by Cook as it has the Brownish Horns. Would it be Ok to have DG move this one to Sable Night.. as the picture on Sable Night right now by another user is not correct and that way Your Beautiful pic will be the main correct Textbook Perfect picture of Sable Night and You would still have all your other pics on Sable just the one with the brown horns moved. Let me know, whatever You decide to do i will respect. In Friendship and Mutual Respect for Saving Beautiful old Heirloom Irises. Sandra.

So heres a link of 'Sable Night' with the same Royal Dark Purple Color and Brown Horns like Your 7343 pic

Yorkshire,

Hi Sandra!

First of all I admire you for your dedication......You put me to shame, LOL.

Thinking about it logically, the place I photographed (what we now believe to be) Sable Night probably had Labelled it correctly. Chances are, perhaps the label was pushed into the ground obscuring the 'Night' part of it ??

We all know how labels get moved around by birds and other things ;)

I think your idea to move the picture is great and THANK YOU SO MUCH for doing this!!!

my dad was from Elkhart, in northern Indiana and my parents both loved flowers when they were alive, so in their memory i am trying to add all of the Northern Indiana created Iris from like Lapham, Cook, Williamson, Gersdorff, Norton, so thats why i had been researching these Cook ones real good the last year. THANK-YOU SO MUCH for agreeing with me on this one :-), i have problems with my tags and labels every year too bending and snapping off and things and pulled out by deer and as i use those copper name plates and the permanant black marker which really isnt permanant as after a season the weather and rain errodes the marker off. With Your Ok, ill now go ahead and ask them if they can move Your Pic to be the Main Pic For 'Sable Night'. It is Beautiful! Infact It is TextBook Beautiful! THANKS TERRI, YOUR FRIEND, Sandra.
