scales or spores on underside of maidenhair fern leaves

I have no idea which, or what to do if its scales...

I will let others answer this because I am not sure. I had similar on my fern - filling the entire underside - not any white coloration as you have on yours, but all black spots. Very uniform. I went into eradicate mode...spraying with everything...turned out it was normally occurring fern reproductive spores

You'd be better off asking this question in the fern forum--this is the Welcome Mat forum, where new members come to introduce themselves, and it's rarely even used.
