Help Toronto gardeners with dappled partial shade garden

My daughters Toronto back yard does face south but partially shaded by garage and a neighbors large horse chestnut (which we will be pruning back)
Looking for ideas. She does love annuals so will be using lots of pots and impatience and fuschias
We would like to have some basic lovely shrubs to add lushness and interest.
I am thinking little leaf lilacs, hostas, junipers ?
Open to ideas and how to group.
