Oh my goodness! What is this stuff? I've never seen it before today. It's grayish looking, and it gets black all over your hand when you touch it. There are 6-8 small patches of it in my yard over a very small area (about 10' square).
Help!!
Stuff on my St. Augustine
looks like sooty mold on your grass. from overwatering or watering late at night. will also happen after excessive rains. should stop once whatever is causing extra moisture stops.

Thanks, VOSSNER. DH just found pics and perfect description on another site, too. They called it slime mold, even though it is not a mold, technically. Said same as you about watering and that it wouldn't harm the grass. That's the best news we could have. So much of our plants/grass took a beating this winter, and the grass just doesn't seem to coming on like it usually does. Many bare spots.
Yes, it's unsightly but harmless. It should go away as soon as things dry out. My St Aug took a beating over the winter, too, and still hasn't filled in as nicely as it usually does.

I wonder if sprinkling some horticultural cornmeal or dry garlic on it would help? Both are anti-fungals.
Carla, our St. Augustine hasn't come back full and lush as it normally does either, but it's getting there. We might fertilize it with Texas Tee, a great organic grass fertilizer.
I usually put alfalfa out on the lawn, but this year I've just been lazy. Well that and Rowlett is under Stage 3 water restrictions -- I can only water the lawn every-other Tuesday. So I'm wondering how in the world I will be able to keep it alive once the heat sets in. The back has filled in quite well but the front is still spotty. But should I spend time, money, and energy fertilizing it if I'm not sure I will be able to water it enough to keep it alive this summer?? It's a depressing dilemma.

"Stuff" gone.
Since we've had rain, keep an eye out for more.
I have slime mold, too, since the heavy rains last week. I had a little last year and it's really harmless.
