the last few days I have noticed small brown beetles in my apartment in south eastern Pennsylvania. They fly if disturbed but not for long and not often. They have long antenna and a black/dark brown butt. They are for the most part only on and around my front door. I have seen several of them at once, kill all of them, and several hours later there are more. I don't know where they are coming from. I tried watching then for a while to see where they are coming out of or going into, but they just king of hung out on the wood frame around the door.
If it helps any, the building I live in is an old textile mill converted into loft apartments. Also, the cat doesn't seem interested in them, unlike any other bug lol so he must have tasted one and not liked it.
CLOSED: small brown beetles
These look like wharf borers (Narcerdes melanura), beetles in the family Oedemeridae. Their larvae develop in very damp/waterlogged/rotten wood, but do not seem to attack sound timbers of any sort. See http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wharf_borer for more detailed information.
