Magnolia Tree.....

Austin, TX(Zone 8b)

My DH came home with a Magnolia Tree.....Little Gem.

It's pretty, but the ticket says morning sun only. We don't have a spot like that for it. Has anyone grown one of these?

Any tips for us???

No room on the east side of your house? I get a ton of shade on my east side yard every afternoon, sad thing is, I have no good place to plant there!

read this from plant files. I think you could find a dappled shade place under some high canopy tree for it.

Hmmm, Austin. Check ph- Magnolia is sensitive to the ph. Extremely so.

kittriana - while most of hill country is alkaline soil, we put additives in all the time to make it more acidic since it seems everything we plant likes it. We mulch with pine bark, and add worm casings and rice hulls to any dirt, as well as compost. We also water with rainwater when ever possible.

It probably doesn't make the soil acidic, but does neutralize most of the alkalinity.....we hope....LOL.

Steady-cam - we found a semi dappled spot. Going to see how it does.

Thank ya'll so much!

I have been wanting this for years !

At the El Chico in Desoto they have one on the east
side of the building and it does just great !

You will love them, I promise you.

Magnolias do great in Austin.

Dallas, TX

Magnolias definitely do great in Austin. No doubt about it. Altho I didn't grow one, I personally liberated many a flower from magnolias in Austin while walking my dog.

Now I'm in Dallas and have a magnificent magnolia grandiflora that covers my entire front yard. House was built in the 1940s and assume the tree was on the lot when the house was built. It's blooming like crazy right now and I make sure that all my neighbors get a share of the goods. (Karma, you know.)

I drove through Georgetown last week just a little NE of Austin and there were so many Magnolias I was surprised. I guess I dont notice them when they aren't blooming.

Just have to say, Little Gem is a special cultivar.

Not huge and spreading like some magnolias
you may have seen.

It grows in a somewhat narrow column yet
has the huge white waxy blooms of a
"regular" magnolia as you might be familiar
with.

BajaBlue - It is blooming now.....we hope it is OK where we planted it, but if we have to move it, your info helps. If it is not going to be so huge, might find a spot.

You are welcome !

Its truly a find ! Your hubby done good !

I have been lusting after some myself, but when I would try to buy, they were always sold out.

Someone once posted the history of it
on DG some years back. Its been on
my wish list ever since.
