Chestnut vine...........have a question.

I have a couple of chestnut vines in large urns with some grape ivy. The ivy is starting to look a bit crappy; i might try to salvage it, but I really want to keep the chestnut vines. Which would be better...........to put them in a large hanging basket or a large pot with an obleisk or trellis? I have a 20 and a 24 inch hanging basket, so when I say large I mean large. LOL

I had to look up Chestnut Vine as I was unfamiliar with it. It sounds like they are super aggressive vines and perhaps it was stealing the water and nutrients from the grape ivy. I think they need to be solitary occupants of a container. I bought a couple of 24" baskets once and after I had them planted I couldn't lift them and I was afraid to hang them for fear they would put too much weight on a branch or beam. I wound up setting them on pedestals. Whichever basket you choose, keep the clippers handy, it appears this vine could eat your house.

Oh, I don't put anything in the house............i have a humongous greenhouse so the size isn't an issue. I do have a nice 6 foot tall round trellis/obleisk that would stick down into a large pot. That might be the way to go, even tho I would love to see it in a 24 inch hanging basket. Hmmmm..........tis a puzzlement...................

An update..............I took both chestnut vines out of each of the 2 urns and put them in a large pot. Like a 20 inch or so. I found a metal trellis that would fit in the pot, so pushed it to the bottom of the pot. Now it's up to the plants. LOL

They got a bit of root-pruning when I took them out of the urns as they were all twined up with the ivy roots. I just took a big serrated knife and sawed them apart. I put the 2 ivy plants in a large hanging basket. If they make it, fine, if they don't, I don't care as i have 3 other ivy plants that are quite large.

Another update.............the chestnut vine is making new shoots, so it looks like the severe root prune and repotting didn't hurt it at all. The ivy transplants that i put in the large hanging basket are also making new shoots. I guess it was a good decision for both plants. I suppose a photo would be in order, eh?
