Wood Poppy makes me smile

(Zone 4b)

Always on the look out for flowering plants that (more than) tolerate shade I purchased a Celandine Poppy (Stylophorum diphyllum) last July. Of course it was nondescript last summer and I had forgotten about it this spring until all of a sudden a couple of weeks ago I all of a sudden noticed the bright green foliage and the happy yellow buttercup like flowers. It is so noticeable this time of year when much of the surrounding ground is brown with leaf litter. A simple plant but it does fill the need in early May.

I have lots of stylophorum in my woods, courtesy of mother nature. It scatters itself about, not aggressively, but I do have to pull those which want to encroach on some of my more demure shade dwellers. I prefer to remove more mature plants, since they become bulky with an extensive (& brilliant yellow) root when they're allowed to grow to maturity. I always have younger plants since it reseeds so avidly, so it always replenishes itself. I love it's random intermingling with other exuberant early spring bloomers, mertensia, helleborus, trillium as seen in the picture below - none were planted, a mother-nature bouquet! I hope it scatters itself about in your yard also!

Yeah this is a nice plant, yours looks great! I just got one for myself this year and I'm excited to have it.

Thanks, wee, for the tip of removing the older plants rather than the young ones. Have to admit that my original placed in the front of an area is big and blocking out other plants.
