What to do?

My Mexican hHat has jst been blooming for about a week, but it's already to tall and leggy it's falling over. Not so pretty. Should I just cut it all off? Will it bloom again?

It is a rather tall plant and with all the wind we have had, Ive had a few stems to flop. I staked mine with some of those green wire stakes with the loop on the end.

Well, mine falls all around from the middle. Don't think it would look good staked or tied up.

"Don't think it would look good staked or tied up."

The first thing that came to my mind was... would it look better floppy or staked up (which could probably be done in any number of unobtrusive ways). Your call...

The things I use are green wire with a loop on the end to hold up the plant. They cant be seen. Get them at Home Depot or make them yourself.

Sybil you can also cut them back to about 6 inches from the ground, they will branch out and be stronger...

I like that idea, Frostweed. But will they bloom again?

Houston Heights, TX(Zone 9a)

Sybram, I think they will. A DG'er gave me two clumps of "hats" I potted them up and cut them in half because of the transplant. They appear to be making new bloom stalks with little hats on top. and guess what else? I rooted in water some of the tops I cut off!

Yes, as Marty said they will bloom again.

Guess I'll do the cut-back, then. I tied/staked them up, and they look pretty bad--just like they're tied and staked. lol. I think they're just to long and lanky to be able to do that. Getting ready for a party out here Friday, but next week I'll be out there with scissors in hand.
