Voles ate large beds of Siberian irises this winter. They're still embedded there, next going to eat the Iris pseudata. I'll have to put little 1/4-inch mesh "fences" around all the remaining Sib and Pseudata irises--- a lot of work. I can't have a cat. No other efficient predators at work.
What's the best bait for mousetraps? Are there any box traps? Repellents? Help!
voles, how to bait, trap?
I haven't heard of traps for them....just poison which I would be reluctant to use.....maybe someone has some ideas.....This has been a horrid winter for pests.....either voles, moles, or mice gnawed on my rose canes & killed my camellia....
I have a trap and it never worked - currently use the bait to kill them
stinkin' voles. I put poison down their tunnels
I've surrendered. Next year I will put more chicken wire around the tender shrubs. Since voles come from underground to eat the iris, there aren't many non-poinonous options. I have complained that I thought they likely ate young peony roots in the past. I see ultrasonic devices advertised but have no idea whether they'd actually work. My dog occasionally chases rhodents that are above the ground, but I have no idea how many he actually kills.
Somehow, my beautiful wren got onto the closed & locked porch yesterday, & ended up in Maggie's mouth.....not a happy camper, here......
My cats love to get voles! Holly had a personal best of 5 in one day! They don't eat the voles - just kill them.
Holly is the best! Listened to a garden radio program the other day....for moles, they said to get coyote or fox urine at the hunting store to get rid of moles....would that work with voles?
