I saw a bird similar to this last year, and after posting a photo, I learned that it was a Hooded Night Heron. A few days ago, I rounded a corner and ran smack into this guy. He posed cooperatively while I snapped away. I don't recall seeing so much blue on the bird I saw last year, so am wondering. Can anybody help me?
Yep; a Black-crowned Night Heron.
Maybe the one you saw before was a subadult, they are browner than the adults like this one.
