I have tomatoes!!!

Houston Heights, TX(Zone 9a)

My Better Boys have fruit about size of tangerine. My Black Krim, Prudens Purple and Celebrity are all blooming. Vines are looking good. I also have baby squashes.

Pics, Steady! We're in the same zone so I have been wondering how the locals have been faring so far. Good luck.

Looks great. What are you feeding your plants?

I'm growing Black Krim too, as well as Talladega and Bush Beefsteak. So far so good. Like you, I have only flowers on the Black Krim, but the plant is still growing and is maybe 4' tall. I have lots of fruit on the bush beefsteak so hopefully I can get a good crop this season.

Everson, WA(Zone 8a)

JC75 please where did you get the seeds for your bush beefsteaks ? Are they op or heirloom? I know so many questions on our first date lol.

League City, TX(Zone 9a)

Lol, eweed. I bought my plants from the local Farmer's market, so they were a good 4" or 5" at that time. I don't know much about them, other than what I was able to find online- sorry.

When I was at the market, I just keyed in on the name because I figured a "bush" plant would be determinate and thus a better fit for my square foot garden. It seems to have more fruit setting-in right now than either my Black Krims or Talladega's.

Ernie,

Not sure if it is the same Bush Beefsteak, but Totally Tomatoes, Tomatofest, and Tomato Growers Supply all list a determinate OP 'Bush Beefsteak'. Stokes Seeds also has a 'Bush Beefsteak' listed with quantity seed available. Here's a link to Stokes and Bush Beefsteak.

Yay Marty! I have one wee little Homestead tomato that's about the size of a marble.

Everson, WA(Zone 8a)

David wow you da man. Thank you so much. Ernie

Today, I harvested 6 large ripe tomatoes from my one Early Girl. She had 8 but two of them had been chewed on. Many more green ones on plant. Better Boys are loaded down but green. My prudens purple has huge fruit but the vine looks terrible. The recent week of daily rain caused some flooding in the area of this plant. It was fine until then. I got photo but unable to post right now. Will try later.

Here is my first harvest, referred to above. Got my program back up and running.

WTG Stephanie! Nice work.
.
Something is eating mine. I think it is 4 legged vs 6 legged.

(Becky), Lipan, TX(Zone 7b)

Oh! Very pretty toms! I had one little bite chomped out of a currant tomato, the rest are fine. Must have been that hornworm I saw last week..

Springfield, OR(Zone 8a)

So Becky, just how small IS a currant tomato?

(Becky), Lipan, TX(Zone 7b)

Turtles, right now they are still green and the size of a pea. They shouldn't get too much bigger, well I wouldn't think anyway.. hope I'll have ripe pics soon :)

Richland, WA(Zone 7b)

Wow, those are SMALL- I have a Ted's pink Currant plant- I hope I am not sorry that I grew it.
I have just discovered the wonderful world of Slow Roasted Tomatoes-(heavenly) and can't wait for fresh maters to use for them. I got some nice Romas and Googled recipes- the one I used did them for 7 hours in a 200 degree oven- drizzle olive oil on and add fresh basil, rosemary and other herbs to your liking- they are so good.

Springfield, OR(Zone 8a)

Oh, Jo, you have me swooning.

Houston Heights, TX(Zone 9a)

These are the ones I didn't eat first or the birds ate first!!!! There's Better Boy, Early Girl and Prudens Purple. These may be the only PP I get. We had rain for a solid week and she almost drowned.

Very nice!

Houston Heights, TX(Zone 9a)

I grew Ted's pink currant last year and I called them, "Tomato Berries" I can see they would be useful in a salad and they taste good but you would have to eat a lot of them to equal one regular size tomato!

Richland, WA(Zone 7b)

thnks, steadycam- my priority is taste- they will be great in salads if you can have a great taste.

Liberty Hill, TX(Zone 8a)

I have found that the different color currant tomatoes are really pretty when served together and the plants are very prolific.

(Becky), Lipan, TX(Zone 7b)

Yes I specifically chose indeterminate varieties that wouldn't peter out completely during summer, and have shorter DTM. The packet for yellow currant says 60 DTM, 1/2" or 1 oz. fruit. So yeah, good to sprinkle on salads or in a gratin, sundried or even roasted. Oh I imagine I'll be in tomato heaven here shortly. I can't wait! The smallest ones I'm growing are 'sweet pea' because they are the size of a pea when ripe.

Lisa, that would be super pretty.. red yellow and pink all together.
