:(
what is wrong with my Malabar spinach
Is it under a drip? from overhead? lets see, anthracnose, white rust, blue mold. Could be anthracnose
No it gets watered when the garden does. What can I do for it? Growing because it is a gorgeous vine but not now. Although it looks very interesting if it wasn't sick
This plant was 6 ft tall and beautiful when I planted it. Would it cover it that quick?
I dont remember how to id anthracnose nor do I remember if it can be cured if that is what it is, but apparently it is very susceptible to it, you will have to check on the veggie forum, they will know
From the AgriLife site:
Q. White spots develop quickly on the upper sides of my spinach leaves, then form holes. The leaves look ragged.
A. This is either Cercospora leaf spot or Anthracnose. These fungal diseases attack spinach causing the described symptoms. A good fungicide program will control these fungi.

I know it's not good for your Malabar, but boy, is it cool looking!
I agree . I have sprayed it with neem and will keep spraying in hopes to conquer it.
I have no idea what it is but that link is for true spinach and Malabar Spinach isn't actually spinach.
I took the picture to a local nursery and she also said a possible fungus and suggested Neem Oil. I am thinking about cutting all the spotted leaves off and keeping the stem and new growth sprayed. How often does neem oil need or can be sprayed?
I know it happened over about a 3 day period from planting in the ground :(
See what your neem oil bottle suggests
Don't spray neem oil in the heat of the day or you will have sautéed spinach. You can buy neem oil premixed or in concentrate then just follow the directions.
If you scroll down on the page in the link I posted, it addresses malabar spinach and diseases. That's the part I quoted.
I saw that it addressed both Malabar and winter spinaches. Both varieties are susceptible to the same diseases anyway...found this by reading additional resources... Save seeds when you get it controlled. It is probably the cooler humiidity causing the fungi increases-
Should I get rid of it and start some seeds? :( I grow it because it is so beautiful
Nope, they would have same probs. It may not die if you keep after it. You might want to try seeds in a DIFFERENT area tho- seems these leaves are edible in salads...
If it's a fungus, sprinkle some plain powdered garlic, like you probably have in your kitchen around the base of the plant. Garlic is a good anti-fungal.
OK great I will sprinkle garlic thanks
Sorry Stephanie I mispoke or mistyped. I just meant to point out the Malabar Spinach is not a true Spinach...it is pretty and edible. I dont think it tastes like spinach but it tastes good.
It mite not hurt to start some more seeds but you mite end up with a lot more MS.
That would be fine as it is a beautiful vine
